Poem 3: “The Business Owner’s Truth”
If I ran my books like they run the Hill,
I’d be out of cash and over the till.
But they keep spending with no regret—
And call it policy, not debt.
There’s no CFO, no quarterly check.
No audit trail—just rubber-stamped debt.
They promise growth, but build decline,
While selling failure as “by design.”
They’d call me reckless, fire me fast,
For cooking books that wouldn’t last.
But Congress moves with no constraint—
And paints its shame as fiscal paint.
If I ran my books like they run the Hill,
I’d be out of cash and over the till.
But they keep spending with no regret—
And call it policy, not debt.
Try cutting benefits, but raising my pay—
My clients would walk away that day.
But this budget does it line by line,
And calls it freedom by design.
No strategy team, no risk report,
Just power plays and spin in court.
No P&L, no future flow—
Just trillions more the people owe.
If I ran my books like they run the Hill,
I’d be out of cash and over the till.
But they keep spending with no regret—
And call it policy, not debt.
SNAP is slashed, Medicaid drained,
Tax cuts permanent, equity strained.
No capital plan, no measured pace—
Just ideology in a fiscal race.
We need a budget that can hold,
Not gilded lies and silver sold.
We need the kind of balanced sheet
That doesn’t crumble at defeat.
If I ran my books like they run the Hill,
I’d be out of cash and over the till.
But they keep spending with no regret—
And call it policy, not debt.
Summary Statement:
This poem is not a metaphor—it’s math. If any business owner ran their finances like Congress just did, they’d be shut down, audited, or imprisoned. Yet Washington moves with impunity, insulated by politics and untouched by professional accountability. This isn’t leadership—it’s institutional malpractice.
Poetry Author Note:
As a published author of three books of poetry—with more on the way—I use verse to confront the truth with rhythm and clarity. Numbers explain. But poetry convicts. It reveals the moral cost of political decisions and speaks to both heart and mind. If it speaks to you, share it. More is coming.
