Poetic Altar Call: “This Is Not What We Signed Up For”
We didn’t fight kings
To kneel to tyrants in red hats.
We didn’t build capitalism
To ration food, health, or freedom.
We didn’t write a Constitution
So it could be shredded by signatures.
We didn’t march for justice
So policies could quietly erase the poor.
This is not what we signed up for.
This is not the country we built.
This is not freedom.
This is not America.
They slash the safety net
But keep the net for corporations.
They cut off Medicaid for mothers
And call it “reform” in press briefings.
They force the working poor
To prove they’re worthy to eat.
Then hand out billions in tax breaks
To the ones already seated at the feast.
This is not what we signed up for.
This is not the country we built.
This is not freedom.
This is not America.
They say it’s about discipline—
But the punishment is always selective.
They leave Social Security untouched
Because most of those on it are white and protected.
They bury civil rights
Beneath fiscal language and law.
But every policy that targets the poor
Still breaks the same moral flaw.
This is not what we signed up for.
This is not the country we built.
This is not freedom.
This is not America.
We are not serfs.
We are not pawns.
We are not here to obey
A budget that strips dignity away.
We are citizens.
We are creators.
We are the builders—
Not the spectators.
